Before Sucker Punch Productions enchanted generations with Sly Cooper, redefined superhero sandbox action with inFAMOUS, or captured global acclaim with Ghost of Tsushima, they began their studio journey with an astonishing technical gamble on the Nintendo 64: Rocket: Robot on Wheels.
Released in 1999 and published by Ubisoft, the game made gaming history by introducing one of the world's very first true real-time 3D rigid-body physics engines ever running on a home console. Designed from scratch by Sucker Punch founders Brian Fleming and Chris Zimmerman, every rolling boulder, floating barge, swinging pendulum, and magnetic tractor-beam grapple was governed by realistic momentum, friction, mass, and inertia.
Now, developer ThatGuyMcd has unleashed Rocket-R: a complete, native static recompilation port that frees Sucker Punch's cosmic amusement park adventure from the performance confines of 1990s silicon, bringing it natively to Windows, Linux, Steam Deck, and Android with uncapped high refresh rates, ultrawide display rendering, full dual-analog controls, and a dedicated modding pipeline.
Beyond Emulation: N64Recomp, RT64 & Native Performance
Rather than running inside a traditional emulator like Project64 or RetroArch, Rocket-R is compiled natively for modern 64-bit microprocessors. Powered by the matching decompilation work of RocketRet and the cutting-edge N64Recomp / RSPRecomp toolchain, the original MIPS binary is statically translated into clean, high-performance C/C++ running over SDL2, N64ModernRuntime, and the RT64 graphics backend:
- Uncapped High Refresh Rates: Rocket's single-wheel momentum and physical obstacle puzzles can now be experienced at a silky-smooth 60 FPS, 120 FPS, 144 FPS, or higher without breaking the game's underlying physics simulation ticks.
- Native Widescreen & Ultrawide: Full support for 16:9, 16:10, and 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratios with customizable Field of View (FOV) sliders and extended draw distance controls.
- Graphics & Texture Detail Overhaul: Includes adjustable Distant Texture Detail (allowing 100% LOD retention across levels), Sky Dithering Reduction to smooth banding gradients, and optional CRT/Slang shader filter support.
- Zero Input Lag: By operating directly against host operating system graphics and audio drivers (Vulkan 1.2 / Direct3D), input latency is reduced to bare-metal minimums.
Modern Analogue Camera & Dedicated Modding Engine
One of the steepest barriers when revisiting 1990s platformers has always been legacy single-stick camera controls. Rocket-R completely overhauls the experience out of the box:

- Modern Analogue Camera (Bundled): Authored directly by ThatGuyMcd, this essential enhancement maps full 360-degree camera rotation to standard gamepad right analog sticks and mouse inputs. It includes independent X/Y axis inversion, customizable camera momentum, stick deadzones, and instant first-person view toggling.
- Dedicated
.mrmMod Architecture: Rocket-R introduces an integrated mod management framework. Players can install code mods, tweak per-mod configuration parameters on the fly, and load custom high-definition RT64 texture packs. - Profile-Isolated Save System: Playing with gameplay modifications or experimental cheats automatically isolates your save files into dedicated mod profiles, guaranteeing your 100% vanilla campaign progress remains pristine.
- Rocket Colour Studio: Customize Rocket's chassis, wheel accents, and metallic finishes directly from the launcher before hopping into Whoopie World.
- Comprehensive Developer Guide: Accompanied by the 16-chapter Rocket-R Modding Bible, detailing memory hooks, event dispatchers, custom shaders, and material definitions for aspiring homebrew creators.
Cross-Platform Excellence: Steam Deck, Windows & Android
Rather than treating alternative operating systems as an afterthought, ThatGuyMcd architected Rocket-R with first-class multi-platform targets:
- Steam Deck Ready: Features a dedicated Steam Deck archive containing an optimized
START-ROCKET-R.shlauncher script, preconfigured for SteamOS controller layers and handheld 800p/720p scaling. - Linux x86_64 & ARM64: Distributed as standalone AppImage bundles alongside portable tarballs that execute seamlessly across Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, and single-board computers.
- Android ARM64 APK: A dedicated native mobile port compiled for Android 64-bit devices with Vulkan 1.2 support. It features customizable on-screen touch overlays, automatic controller detection with auto-hide UI buttons, and private local ROM caching so you never have to re-select files between sessions.
- Controller Studio: An integrated GUI binding tool featuring Guided Setup and Test Inputs modes, supporting Xbox, DualSense, Nintendo Switch Pro, generic HID gamepads, and custom keyboard/mouse configurations.
Clean-Room Preservation & How to Play
In accordance with industry emulation and legal preservation standards, Rocket-R distributes zero proprietary ROM data, Nintendo microcode, or Sucker Punch audio/textures. To generate the game assets, you must provide your own legally dumped US release ROM:
- Download the appropriate package for your operating system from the GitHub Releases page.
- Extract the archive on your PC or install the APK on your Android device.
- Provide an unmodified US N64 ROM file (accepted formats:
.z64,.n64,.v64; Header:NSUE, 12 MiB; Canonical SHA-1:622D71A44DA0B81EA68092CAC9198C66154A4F4A). - On desktop, simply drag and drop the ROM directly onto the launcher and press Play Rocket-R. On Android, select the ROM once through the storage picker.
