Halo CE Mobile Gets Massive Update: Matchmaking, Online Co-Op, and In-Game Cheats on iOS & Android via WebAssembly

Halo: Combat Evolved running in mobile browsers just received a massive update. Developer BanTrev's HCEMobile—rebuilt from the Halo CE decomp—now features 1-50 ranked matchmaking, online campaign co-op, custom game lobbies, and in-game character swapping on iOS and Android.

Halo CE Mobile Gets Massive Update: Matchmaking, Online Co-Op, and In-Game Cheats on iOS & Android via WebAssembly

In November 2001, Bungie and Microsoft launched Halo: Combat Evolved, revolutionizing first-person console shooters with sweeping sci-fi vistas, two-weapon combat sandboxes, and LAN System Link parties. Fast-forward nearly a quarter-century, and the landmark classic is experiencing an extraordinary technological rebirth. Without downloading an emulator or streaming from a remote cloud server, Halo: Combat Evolved is running natively inside web browsers on iPhones, iPads, and Android devices—and it just received a monumental feature update.

Developed by reverse engineer BanTrev (@BanTrev) and highlighted by Halo community archivist CustomRider (@CustomRider05 of Halo Classic Hub), the project known as HCEMobile brings the full C++ decompilation of original Xbox Halo CE directly to mobile browsers via WebAssembly.

The WebAssembly Engine: Progressive Web App Execution

Unlike cloud gaming solutions like Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW, HCEMobile does not stream video over a remote server. The game engine executes entirely on the client's local processor through modern web standards:

C++ Decompilation to WebAssembly: By compiling the reverse-engineered C++ source code of Halo: Combat Evolved with Emscripten, the game logic, physics engine, and AI decision trees run inside the browser's high-speed WebAssembly runtime. Graphics are piped straight into the GPU via WebGL/WebGPU shaders, delivering locked 60 FPS gameplay on modern mobile silicon.

  • PWA Fullscreen & Offline Play: Players can tap "Add to Home Screen" on iOS Safari or Android Chrome to install the Progressive Web App (PWA). It launches as a borderless, full-screen standalone application with persistent offline storage.
  • Touch HUD & Gamepad Input: Features a fully ergonomic on-screen touch control overlay with virtual thumbsticks, weapon swaps, melee, grenade toggles, and flashlight triggers, while seamlessly supporting paired Bluetooth controllers (Xbox Wireless, DualSense, Backbone One, Razer Kishi).

Zero Server Asset Hosting: Clean-Room OPFS Storage

To adhere strictly to copyright laws and Microsoft’s Game Content Usage Rules, hcemobile.com hosts zero proprietary game assets, sound banks, or campaign map files:

  • Bring Your Own Disc Image: To launch the game, users select their own legally dumped original Xbox disc image (.iso or .xiso).
  • Origin Private File System (OPFS): The web app extracts the game’s 1.8 GB maps/ directory directly into the browser’s sandboxed private client storage. No game data is ever uploaded to any external server. Once parsed, the source ISO can be deleted from the phone's storage.
  • Cloud URL Ingestion: For added convenience, players can provide a direct download URL pointing to their personal private storage (Dropbox, Amazon S3, or Cloudflare R2) to fetch their maps over the air.

What’s New in the Massive Update

While previous iterations provided local campaign traversal, this update turns HCEMobile into a fully connected, console-grade multiplayer ecosystem:

1. Competitive Matchmaking & 1–50 Ranks

The update introduces a full online matchmaking queue mirroring the golden era of Xbox Live:

  • Social Playlists: Jump into casual Rumble Pit (free-for-all Slayer and Oddball up to 8 players) or chaotic Big Team Battle on Blood Gulch and Sidewinder.
  • Ranked Playlists: Highly competitive Team Slayer and Head to Head featuring skill-based ranks from 1 to 50.
  • Experimental Modes: Hilarious community playlists including Big Head Slayer, 3rd-Person Slayer, and Hunter Wars.

2. Online Campaign Co-Op & Custom Games Browser

Players can now tackle the legendary campaign together across the globe with full Online Campaign Co-Op. In addition, an interactive Custom Games Browser lets creators host, browse, and password-protect custom multiplayer lobbies with configurable gametypes.

3. Xbox Live-Style Social Infrastructure

A single free account gives players a global cross-device identity: a unique Gamertag, a persistent Friends List (accessible anytime by tapping the on-screen Y button or pressing Y on a controller), private messaging, clan rosters, and real-time lobby/global text chat.

Play as a Grunt: Dynamic In-Game Character Select

Perhaps the most jaw-dropping addition to the campaign pause menu is the real-time Character Select system:

Halo CE Mobile Character Select Menu
The in-game Change Character menu allows switching instantly between Master Chief, Marines, Covenant, and Flood combatants.

At any point during the single-player campaign, players can pause the game and swap their playable avatar on the fly. The character roster includes:

  • UNSC: Master Chief, Marine, Captain Keyes
  • Covenant: Grunt (complete with third-person methane pack physics!), Jackal, Elite, Hunter
  • The Flood & Forerunner: Flood Combat Form, Flood Elite, Infection Form, Forerunner Sentinel, and 343 Guilty Spark!

Integrated Campaign Cheats & Third-Person Mode

Also built directly into the campaign pause menu is a comprehensive suite of real-time developer modifiers:

Halo CE Mobile In-Game Cheats Menu
Instant toggles for Infinite Ammo, Low Gravity, Super Jump, Big Heads, and Third Person mode.
Cheat Modifier Effect in Campaign
Infinite Ammo Uncapped ammunition and plasma battery reserves for all human and Covenant weapons.
Low Gravity Floating lunar physics affecting grenades, vehicles, and Spartan jumps.
Super Jump & Speed Boost Massively increased traversal height and sprint speed across expansive ringworld levels.
Big Heads Classic arcade bobble-head mode applied dynamically to all UNSC and Covenant character models.
One-Shot Kills & Invincibility Lethal damage modifiers and infinite Overshields for power-trip sandbox fun.
Third Person Camera Smooth, dynamic third-person over-the-shoulder camera tracking for traversal and combat.

The Tectonic Shift in Video Game Preservation

Seeing a 2001 sixth-generation console flagship running at native framerates in mobile Safari—complete with 1–50 ranked matchmaking, real-time campaign cheats, and playable Hunters—is a testament to how far static recompilation and WebAssembly have matured. HCEMobile is more than an impressive technical party trick; it is a masterclass in modern digital preservation, demonstrating that classic gaming treasures can live on forever, accessible on any screen, anywhere in the world.
